If you’re heading to the snow this winter season and it’s your first time, you may be wondering how exactly you’re going to stay warm (and look cute) at the same time. If your research has brought you to this blog, then good news- I can help you out! Buying winter clothes can get a little pricey, especially when it comes to ski gear so if you’re looking for a way to keep prices down overall, why not take a trip to the snow with a tour company? Operators like Sightseeing Tours Australia and Last Minute Day Tours are experts when it comes to day tours and if you’re a little nervous about driving on those windy roads all the way to the snow, let them take you instead! A warm bus while you sit back and enjoy the scenery? I think yes!

So let’s get down to business, shall we?

LAYER UP…

A base layer is super important when at the snow as it’s going to make sure that the moisture you’ll make from all the physical exercise and layers you’ll have on won’t make you sweat. A thermal layer will fit tightly around your body ensuring that you stay warm. Avoid materials such as cotton for this layer, and instead, go for polyester or merino for a light base.

Next comes your middle layer which can consist of a fleece top or jacket.

Your outer layer is the most important as this is what is going to keep you warm against any icy winds that come your way. You’ll want to get a thinner jacket which will allow for better movement, you’ll get hot once you’re on the slopes so opt for a lighter jacket and then just put more layers underneath.

*The thing is, you’re generally not going to wear these back when you come to Melbourne so your best bet is to hire one of these out from your ski resort. At Mt. Buller there is a whole heap of retail and retail shops to choose from, stocking everything you’ll need! There’s Snowfox Boutique if you’re looking for something a little more designer quality or Black Mountain for water-resistant clothes for hire.

SKI PANTS…

Another one of those items that you’ll really only use once and are pretty expensive so I recommend renting some out. Opt for a bright, bold colour so other skiers can see you while on the mountain.  You have the choice of tighter, jean-like pants or baggier ones in this area so choose whatever feels comfortable.

ACCESSORISE…

It’s these smaller items that are really going to make a difference when you’re trudging through the snow.

Gloves should be waterproof and travel high above your wrist to protect your hands from touching the snow. There’s no worst thing in my opinion than cold hands. ⛄

A beanie isn’t a requirement however if you tend to get a little colder than others, pop one on under your helmet. For any other time when you’re not skiing/snowboarding, a good quality beanie can pull your look together and keep you warm.

Goggles are super important when skiing, it’ll help you see better if the conditions that day aren’t great and can be easily rented by all outlet stores. Try the Mirimbah Store for their range of goggles!

When you’re out in the snow, you’ll want to protect your face from the elements such as the wind, and as the sun reflects off the snow, it’s really easy to get sunburnt! So to prevent this, bring SPF 50+ Sunscreen with you.

SNOW BOOTS?

Snow boots are equally important when dressing for the snow as you want to ensure your feet are kept warm and dry with breathability being a major comfort factor to keep in mind. Avoid wearing two pairs of socks as this can actually give you blisters! Snow boots are quite expensive as well and can take up a lot of room when packing so if you can, hire them out from one of the rental stores. A pac winter boot is the best snow boots out on the market as they are waterproof and allow for breathability.

GEAR!

There are a couple things you’ll need for your first trip to the snow and the following equipment can be hired out as you won’t need to buy them (not for your first time at least!)

Where can you hire these at Mt. Buller?
